Why it matters
- Most pets lose much of their ability to digest lactose after weaning, similar to many adult humans.
- A small taste is unlikely to cause problems, but a bowl of milk often means an upset stomach hours later.
- Some dairy, like small amounts of plain yogurt or hard cheese, tends to be easier to tolerate than milk itself.
Serving tips
- If you want to share dairy, start with a very small amount of plain yogurt or cheese and see how they handle it.
- Skip milk itself as a regular treat — water is the better everyday drink.
Symptoms to watch for
- Diarrhea or loose stool
