Why it matters
- Vets haven’t pinned down the exact toxic compound, which is part of why the guidance is “avoid completely” rather than “a little is fine.”
- Some dogs have eaten grapes with no obvious effect, while others react badly to just a few — there’s no way to predict who’s sensitive.
- Raisins and currants are concentrated, so a small handful is more potent than the same weight in fresh grapes.
Serving tips
- Skip grapes and raisins entirely — including in trail mix, baked goods, and cereal.
- Try blueberries or a slice of banana as a fruity treat instead.
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting within a few hours of eating them
- Lethargy or reduced appetite over the following day
- Reduced urination (a sign of kidney stress) in the days after
