Why it matters
- A warm stomach is a great environment for dough to keep rising, which can cause painful bloating.
- The yeast also produces alcohol as it ferments, adding alcohol toxicity on top of the bloating risk.
- This is specifically about unbaked, yeasted dough β once bread is baked, this particular risk is gone (see βPlain Breadβ).
Serving tips
- Keep rising dough covered and on a high counter, not somewhere a pet can reach it.
- If you bake, let pets back into the kitchen only after dough is safely in the oven.
Symptoms to watch for
- A visibly bloated or firm abdomen
- Unproductive retching
- Disorientation (from the alcohol produced)
