Is it normal if my pet ignores owner?

Can be personality, overstimulation, or trust-building needed.

Educational only (not medical advice). If changes are sudden or your pet seems unwell, consult a veterinarian.

Why it happens

  • Personality: some pets are independent and not “clingy.”
  • They’re overstimulated or tired and want space.
  • You became “predictable background” (they assume you’re always there).
  • If you’ve been busy, the relationship may need gentle rebuilding.

What to try (low-risk)

  • Offer short positive interactions (2–5 mins): treats, calm petting, play.
  • Let them opt in: sit nearby without grabbing them.
  • Use “value moments”: give treats when they approach you.
  • Try a new shared ritual: same time daily walk/play.

When to get help

These are “extra caution” signals — especially if new or sudden.

  • Sudden avoidance + hiding or fear.
  • Aggression or extreme reactivity that is new.

You’re not overreacting. If your gut says something is off, it’s okay to consult a veterinarian.
