Can dogs and cats eat salty snacks?
A few chips aren’t an emergency, but a genuinely large amount of salt can cause real problems.

Why it matters
- Excess sodium can lead to excessive thirst and urination, and in extreme cases something called sodium ion poisoning.
- This is much more of a concern with a large, concentrated amount (like an entire bag of pretzels) than an occasional stray chip.
- Small pets are at higher relative risk than large ones for the same amount of salty food.
Serving tips
- Keep salty snack bowls out of reach at parties and gatherings.
- Offer plain, unsalted popcorn or veggies instead if you want to share a snack.
Symptoms to watch for
- Excessive thirst or urination
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Wobbliness or tremors (only with very large amounts)
When to get help
- If they’ve eaten a large quantity of salty food and seem unwell, or show any wobbliness/tremors, contact your vet.
