Can dogs and cats eat walnuts?
Fresh walnuts are mostly just a fatty, hard-to-digest snack β moldy ones are the real hazard.

Why it matters
- Walnuts (and black walnuts especially) can develop mold that produces tremorgenic mycotoxins β compounds that affect the nervous system.
- Even without mold, walnuts are high in fat and hard to digest in quantity, which can trigger an upset stomach or pancreatitis risk.
- Walnuts that have been sitting outside (like under a backyard tree) are the highest-risk scenario.
Serving tips
- Keep walnuts (fresh or moldy) out of reach, and clear fallen nuts from the yard if you have a walnut tree.
- Plain peanuts are a lower-risk nutty option in small amounts.
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting
- Tremors or wobbliness (especially after eating moldy nuts)
- Seizures in serious cases
